Nasreen Mohamedi
2022
The design for this book is a reflection of the work of artist Nasreen Mohamedi (1937–1990). It was created for a traveling exhibition of Nasreen Mohamedi's work exhibited in four locations in India in 2022. This was the first time the artists work was exhibited in the country.
The book gives the reader a sense of the artist through use of white space, the information design and design interventions.
The cover was designed to be as subtle and simplistic as the artist and her work. An element taken from one of her drawings, the embossed lines on the cover create a tangible invitation to the reader to experience the book through touch and careful observation.
The proportions of the book are an ode to the artist’s early works, in square format. Her later, rectangular works, are reflected when the book is open, creating the shape. The shades of white paper used through the book were chosen after looking at original works by Mohamedi – always done on white heavyweight papers, that aged to an off-white/ivory hue. The transparencies opening each essay through the book, create a fading illusory quality activating the text and the printed line element.
The shades of grey used through the publication, represent the use of graphite – the main medium used by Mohamedi in her drawings.
Each essay is accompanied by an intervention – a printed or stamped element designed to re-create the tangible nature of the artist’s work, her attention to detail, and highlight an aspect of her drawings.

The use of the grid – extremely important in the Mohamedi’s work – has been referenced by the nine punched circles which appear and disappear in sequence as the pages are turned.
